Enhancement of Cathodic Protection System for UG Pipelines – Karun Oil & Gas Operational Area

Client: Karun Oil & Gas Production Company
    Contract Type: PC

    Project Objectives Summary:

Buried steel pipelines are highly susceptible to corrosion. Cathodic protection (CP) is an industry-standard method for controlling corrosion, which works by turning the pipeline into the “cathode” of an electrochemical cell. This process can be implemented using two methods: impressed current systems (including transformer-rectifiers and anode beds) or sacrificial anodes. Cathodic protection, combined with external pipeline coating, helps extend equipment lifespan, prevent leaks, and enhance operational and environmental safety.

    Overview of Main Activities:

The scope of activities included the procurement and transportation of pipes, excavation and trench preparation, pipe laying and welding, non-destructive testing and radiography, sandblasting and coating, backfilling and compaction, construction of access and temporary roads, installation of metal structures and supports, execution of aboveground (AG) sections, tie-in operations, completion of mechanical works, and assistance in pre-commissioning and commissioning.
